Art for the Visually Impaired

When you have had the priviledge of seeing the work  of an extraordinary human being and wonderful Artist, your life is forever changed. This is what happened to me when I saw the work of   “Zabeliz”, Ma. Carmen Zabaleta Elizondo.

She has just organized an exhibition, the first one of its kind nationwide in the City of Puebla, Mexico entitled SINESTESIA (a combination of feelings and sensations of a different nature).  People who are unable to see or who are partially blind, are allowed to touch and feel each and every painting and sculpture.  These feelings are enhanced by the subtle aroma of incense and,  earphones with music especially chosen for  each work of Art.

Técnica Mixta- We asked Zabeliz about her reasons for this kind of exhibit.  She told us that she had mixed feelings when she was inspired with this idea:  First she felt dismay for not having considered visually impaired people before;  and later she was filled with enthusiasm and emotion when she felt her fellow artists response to it.  The people who were happy to participate, were asked to include different textures in their work and the combination of composition, harmony and originality.

For people who wish to experience these sensations,   there are blindfolds  available.  Every painting and sculpture has explanations  in Braille as well as in writing.

The sculpture shown here was made by Frank Heyer and is titled “over water”.  It is made of steel and wood and is one of my favorites.

Hispanics and Mixted Martial Arts

By Luis Abraham Moreno Ballve

I appreciate this opportunity to tell you about Mixed Martial Arts, as I believe, we Hispanics in general, know very little about this one-on- one  combat sport,  in which there is a mingling of different   techniques like:  Karate, Judo, Boxing. Tae-kwon Do, Jiu-Jitsu and Vale-Tudo, among others.

Athletes require years of intensive training in order to test  themselves in a Boxing Ring or in an Octagon Fighting Arena, where they usually go for 3 - 5 minutes rounds.

This relatively young Sport has evolved  until becoming an extreme, explosive combat.  The strategy and the ability of the athletes are fundamental to beating their opponents in a highly exciting fight from begining to end.

Even though  it is not a well known Sport, it is already being practiced in many Countries, and I am proud to mention that Hispanics are among the best and,  are or have been,  World Champions.  Among them I  would like to mention Tito Ortiz and Diego Sanchez.
