Chichen-Itza, legendary Mayan city, due to its strategic location, was very powerful, military and commercially,  for over 300 years.  Located in the middle and surrounded by other buildings we find the imposing Temple of Kukulcan, or “The Castle” as it is known.

This important pyramid allowed the Mayans to determine quite accurately de changing of the Seasons.  The equinox determines  the arrival of Spring and Autumn;  and the Summer Solstice clearly marks the middle of the year.  Between 7:15 and 7:30 in the morning of June 21st or 22nd, half the pyramid is dark while the other half shines with the light from the Sun.

In Winter, nevertheless, it is the other way around.  This phenomenom happens between 7:15 and 7:30 at night on December 21st or 22nd, when the western and southern sides are alight with the Sun and the eastern and northern sides are dark.

This pyramid was deliberately built for this, and the more we know, the more we are amazed at their incredible knowledge of mathematics and astrology.

Chichen-Itza, la legendaria ciudad de los mayas, debido a su ubicación estratégica,  impuso su poderío militar y comercial durante 300 años.  En el centro de la misma, enmedio de una gran explanada y rodeada de otros edificios se encuentra el Templo de Kukulcan, o ”El Castillo” como se le conoce.

La importancia de esta pirámide, entre otras cosas, permitía a los mayas determinar con gran exactitud los cambios de las estaciones.  Los Equinoccios determinan la entrada de la primavera y del otoño;  y el Solsticio de Verano marca con exactitud la mitad del año.  Entre las 7:15 y 7:30 de la mañana del 21 ó 22 de junio, la mitad de la pirámide permanece oscura y la otra mitad iluminada por los rayos del sol.

En invierno, sin embargo, es al revés.  Este fenómeno ocurre entre las 7:15 y 7:30 de la noche el día 21 ó 22 de diciembre y los lados poniente y sur permanecen iluminados y el oriente y norte oscuros.

 La pirámide fue construída de esta manera de forma deliberada, y aún ahora nos continúa asombrando los grandes conocimientos matemáticos y astrológicos que tenían los mayas,  entre muchos otros.
