El 2 de febrero se festeja el Día de la Virgen de la Candelaria, o Día de la Candelaria.   El festejo viene a raiz de 2 cosas importantes que sucedieron a principios de la era cristiana:  el primero se trata acerca del  40a. día  después del nacimiento de Jesús o como se le dice oficialmente, la Purificación de la Virgen;  el segundo se refiere a la presentación en el tempo de Jesús.  De la misma manera tenemos en México dos costumbres diferentes para el Día de la Virgen de la Candelaria.

La costumbre más arraigada en todas las esferas sociales se debe a la Rosca de Reyes que si leyeron en nuestro artículo de principios de mes, ya conocen que dentro de la rosca se encuentran varios muñequitos.  Quienes tuvieron  la suerte de cortar la rebanada en donde se encontraban los muñequitos deberán unirse para invitar a todos los participantes a una cena de tamales y chocolate o atole el 2 de febrero, Día de la Virgen de la Candelaria.

La segunda costumbre en este Día de la Virgen de la Candelaria, empieza el 24 de diciembre  a medianoche.  En algunos hogares la familia de la casa tiene un muñeco en forma de niño Jesús.  A las 12 de la noche se acostumbra arrullar al bebé y cantarle canciones de cuña para acostarlo en el pesebre.  Se elige al padrino o madrina y este compadrazgo es para toda la vida.  A  principios de enero los padrinos se llevan a los muñecos a vestir.  Hay gente que se especializa en restaurarlos y vestirlos.  Pueden vestirlos con diferentes motivos según los deseos de los padrinos para sus compadres para todo el año:  Puede ser con el traje del equipo de futbol favorito para darles buena suerte, o como doctores para tener buena salud, de color blanco con monedas para prosperidad, etc.

El 2 de febrero los padrinos llevan al bebé a la iglesia para ser bendecido junto con 12 velas o veladoras, 1 por mes, para ser prendidas a principios de mes o en ocasiones de alguna petición especial.  Por la noche los padrinos ofrecen tamales y atole a sus compadres y a quienes deseen invitar.  Los dueños del Niño Dios es posible que tengan varios muñecos  por lo que deberán ir un rato a casa de cada uno de sus compadres para recibir su muñeco, velas y flores y comer tamales.

Al morir los dueños de los Niños Dios, pueden heredarlos a sus hijos, parientes o a los mismos compadres.

On February 2nd. we celebrate de Day of the Virgin of  Candles.  This feast derives from 2 different occurences at the beginning of the Christian era:  First it is about the 40th day after the birth of  Jesus, officially known as the Purification of the Virgin, and the second is about Jesus’  presentation at Temple.  In the same way, we have 2 different celebrations on that day in Mexico.

The 1st one is the most popular:  as you may have read in our previous post about Rosca of Kings, inside it are several tiny dolls.  Whoever got them will get together to buy tamales and hot chocolate to share with all who participated in the cutting of the rosca on the evening of February 2, Day of the Virgin of the Candles.

The second tradition is more elaborate as it begins at midnight on December 24 where in some homes the family has a Baby Jesus doll which they cuddle and sing lullabyes to before laying it down to sleep in a manger.  They choose the godparents and this is for life.  In the first days of January the godparents take the Baby Jesus doll to be dressed.  There are people dedicated to restore and dress dolls.  They can be dressed with different types of attires:  as their favorite soccer team, to give them good luck, as a doctor, to bring health, in white with coins for prosperity, etc.

On February the 2nd, they take the doll to chuch to be blessed with 12 candles or votive candles, which can be lit for special occasions or requests during the year.  In the evening they offer tamales and hot chocolate to the owners of the baby, who might own several dolls, so they will stay for a little while and then go to the other homes where they have the other babies.  They pick up  their dolls  and receive the candles and flowers and put them away until next Christmas Eve when they repeat the ceremony.

So, if you got the doll in the Rosca of Kings or if you are a godparent to one, start getting ready with your tamales and hot chocolate for this February 2, Day of the Virgin of Candles!
